The Log assessment- net & journalism

April 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I did not paid attention to Web Journalism before and I thought that it was not real journalism. Now, I can see that Web Journalism is really powerful and is a fast-growing field, as for the first time the reader has actually the power to contribute to a story and tell his view through an easier way, before  the reader used  letters to contact the outlet but web made this contact into an actual communication with the journalist. In addition, Web apart from the interactivity offers continuous updates, opens space for other forms of journalism such as blogging and multimedia journalism. Multimedia journalism,in my point of view, is in an experimenting phase but still is a medium that is going to catch on pretty fast, as Web Journalism creates new kinds of journalism and gives new limitations to it, such as the rule of keeping a story on the net sort because the reader easaly gets dustracted. On the other hand though Web offers free space for everyone to speak, even to false journalists but I guess that is the beauty of Internet.

The Log assessment-online part

Personally I had no clue about twitter, rss and all these services. So, the online part really help me to get to know what these are all about. I really enjoyed blogging at the end, and all these classes helped me to use Internet better and be more confident with it. For me if this module was running for longer time it would be better as I see myself learning a lot of interesting characteristics about the Web that I was ignoring before. :)

The Log assessment-audio

The audio assignment was the first of the multimedia assignments that we had to do. I was really exited about the subject and really proud for making this video as it gave me the opportunity to give a more clear perspective about what actually happend after the 15-year old was killed by the police in Athens. I wanted a full angle that’s why I choose an econimics student whois uni is one of the unis who organised the major demonstrations, a exarxeia citizen and a police officer. It was pretty hard to make the choice of the people that I was going to interview and find the connections that I needed, another problem I face was the phone interviews, as I could not find the studio free. Overall, I learned a lot through that assignment and I really enjoyed it.

The Log assessment-video

Along with Ave we decided to do a kind of Vox pop about style for our Video Assignment. We asked several different people with different taste in fashion to define their style. We both enjoy the expirience and in one hour only, we had enough material to create our video. It was a good opportunity to get to know how the camera works, how to communicate with people and basically the whole process of creating a video. Before that assignment, I personally thought that is difficult to make a video like that that’s why at first I was a bit anxious about it.

Critical Evaluation —> FAQfashion.wordpress.com

Our first thought was that each one of the FAQers is going to be responsible for her own section of posts. This idea worked well because we could form our posts in our way, but still we followed a basic line that we all together agreed.  We tried many ideas to promote our blog; twitter, little polls to encourage interactivity, creating a facebook group and even printing little yellow cards with our FAQing site so the people who participated in our photographs, videos and general in our blog could take a look in the posts they helped us making them, (we even give one of these little cards to Ben Gilbert ;) ) Apparently, that worked as we came up with 1000 views during these two weeks. We have many followers and we thing this is due to our theme, we choose to cover fashion from a different perspective and talk about real people and their style.

My role was to take pictures of several students who had different style. At first I found some difficulties in how to use the camera, where are all the stylist students and I did not know if the people that I was going to ask would like to pose for me. Apparently, I ‘ve learned how to use the camera and I got more confident into asking several people as they were all happy to pose, plus they were willing to check their pics in our blog increasing our views in the same time. I was hoping for better styles, more eccentric, but still it was difficult to find really intersting styles.

Overall, we all enjoyed the experience of blogging so much that we decided to keep up with FAQfashion and update it from time to time. So, that means that we all collaborate and create a unique style for our blog that we all like.
